New Shul member and commercial photographer Marty Umans visited with us on December 13th to fill us in on his start as a photojournalist and some of the amazing projects he has worked on throughout his career, including a trip he took to Kenya to shoot for Operation Smile and some portraits of juveniles from the lower east side in NYC. You can check out some of the images he showed us on his website: http://martyumans.com and blog: http://martyumans.com/blog
All of this is in preparation to begin our own photographic study of tensions pertaining to Israel. As you saw in the last post the photographs revealed tensions between religious and secular Jews living in Israel, but after listening to Marty we've realized there are many tensions that we might depict in our photographs... religious and secular Jews living here in NY, the religious and secular tensions of our own lives, our love/hate relationship with Israel or with the Jewish faith, tensions between Jews and non-Jews even... over the next couple of weeks we're gonna get out and shoot some pictures to tell these stories... check back soon!
